The Ballet Group was formed as a non-profit making organization in July 1964 by a group of local teachers, with the support of the Education Department. The Ballet Group aimed to offer local ballet students an outlet for their teachers together.
Regular meetings were held and classes were organized for the students and if a visiting artist was visiting Hong Kong, they would be invited to give classes to the students.
The first two performances were presented by the Hong Kong Music Department in 1966 and 1969 respectively. In 1970, Honorary Advisors were appointed, and Mr. Darwin Chen was being one of them. 1973 was a turning point in the history of the Ballet Group, when Dame Margot Fonteyn became our Patron, the Governor's wife became the Honorary Patron and Mrs. Sally Leung became the President.
Mr. Heinz Bosl, a wonderful German artist partnered Dame Margot Fonteyn with the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra in the fundraising performance for the Ballet Group at the Lee Theatre in 1974. With the sudden death of Mr Bosl shortly after the event, Mrs. Sally Leung launched a Scholarship in his memory. Mr. Cliff Lui has been the fortunate one to be the first recipient of the Scholarship to study at the Royal Ballet School for one year.
A second scholarship was made possible by a BAT sponsorship in 1991 and named after Dame Margot Fonteyn who inspired the Ballet Group for 18 years. There has been a third scholarship over the years given by the General Electric to enable two students each year to attend an overseas summer school.
Performance have been given regularly with the great support from the formerly known Urban Council, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and also today we have good built up close relationship with the local ballet schools, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Ballet Company.
When Dr. Stanley Ho was elected President, the Ballet Group made its Macau debut performance. Since then, the Ballet Group, with the kind assistance from Ms Flora Cheong-Leen and Ms Pearl Chan, has visited Singapore, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Readers Digest has made the Shenzhen Tour possible. |
